Abflug Nissan GT-R R35 Roof Panel (Dry Carbon)
The dry carbon roof panel is an autoclave-made carbon roof that uses the same carbon fibre as the original equipment used in recent high-performance vehicles such as the BMW M Series. The specific gravity of carbon fibre is around 1.4 kg, and its tensile strength is equal to or greater than that of steel, so it can be made much lighter than steel, which has a specific gravity of 7.85 kg.
This dry carbon roof has five layers of carbon fibre and a thickness of 1.2 mm, giving it a tensile strength of 255 MPa or more. The dry carbon roof made using this process weighs 2.1 kg compared to the original panel of 7.0 kg, achieving a weight reduction of 4.9 kg, while maintaining the same or greater rigidity as steel and realizing safety.
The installation of the dry carbon roof also lowers the centre of gravity, which is expected to have a positive effect on the roll moment of inertia.
